It would be awesome to have an option on longer macros to have it only play while a key is held, so if something goes wrong you can cancel the sequence by letting go of a key!

You can do it using Turbo. Adjust your combo and then check Turbo option on the main app's page. Also, I would suggest you to set a bigger time between iterations (it's the field next to the Turbo checkbox):
Turbo repeats the combo (or an ordinary mapping) while you press and hold the physical button. It will interrupt your long combo if you release the physical button. The longer time between iterations will prevent the start of the next combo iteration in case you haven't stopped it by releasing a button.
Also, Toggle may help. To start a combo with Toggle, you need to press the button once. Then, it will be emulated from start to the end and then will repeat itself again. When you press the physical button the second time, combo stops. -
