Each shift layer has its own modificator. Shift modificator is the mapping that you have to press in order to switch to another shift mode.
You can check the details about the Shift Mode here.
The shift change on-fly is not possible for now. You should get back to the main Shift Layer before switching to another one. We are already making on a solution to switch the layers from every layer you have, not only the main one.
Still, you can use the slots feature if you wish to change the configuration on-fly, using one key or a key combination,
