is there a way to emulate '3d mouse' movement with the thumbstick. blender has 3d mouse capability but no thumbstick capability... its really dumb. being able to do this via software could replace hardware costing + $600

Depends on what you mean by "3D mouse" there. reWASD is able to emulate virtual controller, keyboard and mouse and remap whatever is supported to one of them.
I have no idea how "3D mouse movement" is done in Blender, but if it can be done with regular mouse, then reWASD will most likely be able to do it to.
