Maybe you could try activators for this case?

In Shift Layer 3, please set Esc to Single Press while Shift Jump to the Main configuration may be added to Release activator. This way you will be able to use Esc in Shift 3 only, and each time you release LMB, you will be back to Layer 0.

I think in this particular case it is possible to use a Combo:

Pause 1ms > Break > ESC

on [LMB] for the same effect with shift change in toggle mode.

We have plans to add commands (including the shift change) to combo, so another solution would be available then. No ETA is set for this yet.

Trying out the new 6.1, adds a lot of great functionality. Would like to expand on it further in this way:

Shift layer 0 - LMB unmapped
Shift Layer 3 - LMB remapped to Esc, shift mode set to shift layer 0 when activated

At the moment it doesn't seem like you can have different mappings in shift layers assigned to the same button, then switch between them
