  • Remapping: Explicit option to record single button press

Note: While typing this, I realised that it is possible to listen for a single key press as long as "Hook controller buttons" is checked AND remap is disabled. This is not clear in the UI and should maybe be made clearer. I still think a button to explicitly tell it to listen for the next input when remap is enabled could be useful; it works in the combo record.

This is pretty minor but could make defining a remap a much smoother experience - currently, when you define a remap, you have to select the button from the dropdown list.

This can be quite cumbersome as it's a pretty long list of all keyboard keys and controller actions. Arguably a one dimensional dropdown isn't the best option for something like this anyway, and the "combo" remapping page has a much better interface. You can filter down what types of input the list displays, which is nice, but it can still be a pretty long list.

It would be great if there was a little button next to the drop down list just to tell it to listen to the next key press. A lot of control remappings (e.g. in games, emulators etc) do this, and reWASD even has this capability when recording a stream of inputs for a combo.

    Current Options
    • Select input from long list of keys
      • Can be made slightly easier by filtering on remap type (e.g. just controller buttons)
    • Stupid solution: Make a single key-press combo just because the interface is slightly easier to deal with#
    • Actual solution: Ensure "Hook controller buttons" is checked and remap is not currently active. This is not obvious!
    Possible solutions
    • Add button to record single key press/controller input/etc
    • Make it more obvious in the remapping UI that hook controller buttons won't work because a remap is currently enabled
    • Implement the 2D display of inputs or a way to open the 2D display of inputs that is already displayed on the Combo view

  • #2
I can't promise this will be implemented, as the system is currently quite simple. While remapping is disabled, keyboard and controller buttons are hooked from the list, and it's really simple and convenient.
Having an alternative interface or an additional checkbox directly next to the mappings window might be convenient for some, but confusing for others.
In any case, thanks for the suggestion. We'll take it into account.
