  • Question about reWASD capabilities in relation to Steam Deck running Windows 11

    Hello,

some question below as I am curious if reWASD will work with my use case:

    1. I believe that on Steam Controller and Steam Deck you can remap Steam button, but can you also remap three dot button (called Quick Access Menu button) on the Deck?
    2. Does reWASD sends bindings to specific game window/process or are they send to the OS? That is, if I have some config for game "A" and then use one of the assigned hotkeys to suspend said game process (let's say Windows + S triggered by pressing A button on the Deck), will I be able to resume it from reWASD? Steam Input, for example, only sends commands to the game process itself, so suspended process equals suspended Steam Input, unless you use Guide Button Chord config that is actually OS wide.
    3. Does reWASD work with Steam Remote Play / Steam Link, without installing it on the host (I have only 1 license, and no desire to buy more)? Use case is to use Steam Deck with reWASD to send modified input through Steam Remote Play / Steam Link to my host PC
    4. I believe that "Slots" are the equivalent of Action Sets in Steam Input, meaning totally separate configs (as opposed to layers). Can you change slots using Press/Release combo? Let's say, I want to go to slot #2 from slot #1 so I press assigned button and as long as said button is pressed slot #2 will be active, but releasing said button will switch back to slot #1. If that does not work, can you assign the same button to switch back and forth between two slots?
    5. Can you create 8-way dpad on a trackpad, but with separate inner/outer binding? For example, when I touch the edges of the trackpad I can trigger WSAD, but at the center of it I can bind Space. I know that there are zones, but are they separate, or is it like additional binding triggered together with directional ones?
    6. Can you have multiple buttons being used to switch to a particular layer, not as a chord/combo, but as separate presses?

    Hello.

    1. Yes
    2. reWASD emulates input exclusively to the active window. An exception may be applications that can accept input sent to the system even while in the background (for example, media players).
    3. You emulate a virtual controller within the Windows system and "share" that controller with the Steam Link. So I guess yes.
    4. No, Shift layers will work for this purpose.
    5. Yes. In reWASD you can assign a ready-made D-pad mapping to the edges of the trackpad, and the central zone can be separately reassigned to another mapping (both tap and click).

    6. No.

      Thank you for responding,

#2. Does it mean that Autohotkey is incapable of intercepting reWASD mapped keys?
#3. Is there virtual Steam Deck / Steam Controller or are they seen as XBox / PS ones?
#5. OK, so I cannot have 8 separate bindings on a dpad with central 9-th button?

#2. Autohotkey should detect input that is emulated in reWASD, but not vice versa. However, in the future, we plan to make it so that virtual input that is emulated by software such as Autohotkey is detected and can be processed in reWASD,
#3. No. reWASD can emulate the following virtual controllers: Xbox One, Xbox 360, Dualshock 3, Dualshock 4, Nintendo Switch Pro.
#5. You can enable the "Use 8 directions" option in Advanced trackpad settings and assign mappings to diagonal directions by enabling the digital mode on a trackpad. Moreover, you can use shortcuts to get additional mapping options.

And I guess, using joystick on a trackpad with 8 different bindings won't work as zones are triggered together with actual directional binding right?

I have clarified the information and edited my previous post. Please check it out.
