reWASD mapping stays off when controller is connected.

The reWASD mapping remains off whenever I connect my controller. This started happening all of a sudden without me making any changes. Every time I connect the controller, I need to go in and click Apply to enable the remapping. I have tried setting "Restore remap state on startup" both on and off, but nothing fixes it. How do I make the remapping on by default whenever I connect the controller?

The main requirement for this option is that the config must be applied to the device before disconnecting it. If remapping was disabled before you disconnected the device, it won't be enabled when you reconnect it.

Well, that is what I'm trying, but it doesn't work. This is the sequence:
1. Turn on controller, remap is off
2. Go into reWASD, turn remapping on - controller works fine at this point
3. Turn controller off
4. Turn controller back on again, and the remap is off again and needs to be manually turned on again

How do I keep the remap always on when turning the controller on?

Please try a simple Clear data first (you can find it in Preferences → General), then check if the issue persists afterward.
