Using the analog stick for true analog movement (not just 8-direction movement)

Could you please provide an example of a tool that emulates this approach and actually works in games?

Steam input gives you the option of emulating true analog output by setting joystick behaviour to "Directional Pad", and changing the "Directional Pad Layout" to "Analog Emulation". It tends to works well enough to use in games that have acceleration on movement, like Deus Ex (2000). On games where there is no acceleration on movement, the effect is not convincing.
